Thickness is one factor in choosing gym flooring, not the only one. Rubber density, construction, equipment weight, equipment-foot size, drop height and drop frequency all affect how a floor performs, alongside the subfloor beneath it.
Light cardio use, general exercise, heavy equipment and free-weight areas with repeated barbell drops all place different demands, so a single thickness rarely suits an entire gym. Door clearance and wheelchair transitions should also be checked, since flooring build-up can affect level access.

Structural Capacity: Gym flooring does not increase the structural capacity of the floor beneath it. Heavy equipment installed upstairs or on a suspended timber floor may need separate professional structural engineering advice.
Moisture Control: Rubber matting should not be treated as completely waterproof. Moisture can become trapped beneath an unsuitable installation, particularly over timber floors, so subfloor preparation should be checked before ordering.
Treadmill vibration, dropped weights and impact noise all travel differently depending on the building structure. This is often a key concern for hotels, apartment developments and gyms sited above or beside occupied rooms.

There isn't a single best option, since gyms usually combine more than one flooring type. Cardio, free-weight, functional and studio areas each place different demands on the floor, so the right approach usually combines tiles, rolls or mats by zone.
Thickness depends on the equipment involved, drop height, drop frequency and the subfloor underneath. Cardio and studio areas typically need less thickness (e.g. 10mm-15mm) than free-weight or lifting zones (which often require 20mm-30mm density).
Rubber tiles are commonly used under treadmills and cardio machines, provided tile size and density suit the machine's footprint and weight to distribute load and absorb vibrations.
Free-weight areas generally need denser rubber flooring that extends beyond the equipment itself, since dropped weights and foot traffic both affect the surrounding floor, unlike lighter cardio flooring.
